Professional Integrity

As practitioners, professional integrity is essential, as we often work in some of the most intimate and significant moments of our consumers’ lives. Interpreters can demonstrate integrity in many ways, but one example of my work that illustrates Competency 5.4 is my response to two scenarios involving dilemmas in business practices. I begin by summarizing each scenario, then analyze them using the method and framework taught in class: Analyze the Dilemma, Identify Possible Solutions, Make a Decision, and Consider the Impact.

Because I am not yet a practitioner, I have not had the opportunity to face real ethical dilemmas or apply the CPC in field settings. Working through these scenarios methodically has given me the space to imagine what it will be like to practice professionally and to consider how I might respond in challenging situations. I value the opportunity not only to apply what I have learned about ethical decision-making, but also to practice grounding my decisions in the CPC. This experience helps me feel more prepared for moments in the field when quick, principled choices will be required.

Throughout the program, I have seen significant growth in my ethical reasoning. Earlier in my studies, I was more hesitant to make decisions, fearing unintended consequences. Over time, I have come to understand that every action will have both intended and unintended outcomes—some positive, some negative. What matters is acting in ways that align with the CPC and my professional values.

Working through the provided scenarios allowed me to practice making decisions that are consistent with the CPC while also honoring my own values. As I continue to develop my professional identity, I am gaining clarity about which values I prioritize and how they guide my choices. I believe the work presented demonstrates sound ethical decision-making and the ability to generate thoughtful, creative solutions.

Moral development is a lifelong process, and I am committed to continuing this growth as I enter the field. I am grateful for the progress I have already made in my confidence and my ability to make grounded, ethical decisions. At the same time, I look forward to further development as practical experience deepens both my judgment and my sense of self as a practitioner.
